What does it take to become a member of The Stage Company?

Taking part in a production (in any capacity), signing a release form, and having a desire to help.

What kind of jobs need doing?

We are always looking for actors, but it takes more than actors to mount a production. There are people working backstage on lighting, sound, handling props, etc. In addition, we need graphic designers, people who can sell ads, people to man the ticket counter. All kinds of stuff. If you're not sure if your particular expertise could help, just ask!

Can I attend board meetings?

Sure. Except for very rare special closed sessions, board meetings are open. They take place the second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM, at the Rodgers Theater.

I don't know anything about stage makeup or anything like that. Does that disqualify me from acting?

Not at all. Many of us had never done these things before we joined The Stage Company. Don't worry, if you want to learn, we can teach you what you need to know.

How are plays selected for production?

Our plays are selected by the Board each year, in late Winter or early Spring, for the following season. Prospective directors bring plays they want to direct to the board, and the board selects a slate of productions, and sets a schedule.

How do you select actors?

Generally, the director will hold auditions a few weeks before rehearsals are to begin. Those auditioning will usually be asked to read scenes from the play. Often, the director will mix and match different candidates in doing scenes to see which combination works best for the play. Auditons are usually held more than one night, and coming back will usually raise your chances of getting a part.

I didn't get the part. Does that mean I'm no good?

Not at all! It just means the director decided that someone else fit HIS production better. There are a lot of reasons for not getting the part. Perhaps the director had a different physical type in mind (you are slim, when he wanted someone chunky). Perhaps he found two other people who have a particular "chemistry" and wants to use that in his production. Or maybe he just felt another person fit the type of ensemble he had in mind. Don't let it keep you from auditioning again!

How long does it take to rehearse a play?

Most directors will have anywhere from six to eight weeks of rehearsals, three or four nights a week, before opening night. This schedule will vary depending on the complexity of the production, the preferences of the director, and the mix of actors.
